Statement on cryptocurrency and NFTs by Rockstar Games in GTA 6
Key points:
- Rockstar Games released new terms and conditions for GTA 6 "fan mods" and addressed the topic of cryptocurrencies and NFTs.
- They clearly state that users cannot modify their games into NFTs and cryptocurrencies.
- Rockstar Games may take legal action against 3rd party usage of NFTs and cryptocurrencies/modding of any kind.
While the Terms state that Rockstar Games allows "creators" to use "reasonable fan creativity" to demonstrate their passion for the game, using it for commercial purposes is subject to legal prosecution.
For the uninitiated, Rockstar Games has always allowed users to develop "mods" if they wished for single-player use. However, the terms state that the purpose of creating a "mod" must be non-commercial.
For those who don't know what a mod means in video games, it's a modified version of the original game.
Example: Below is an image of Carl Johnson driving a car in GTA San Andreas, originally created by Rockstar Games.
Below is another photo of Carl Johnson floating in the air, removing his car while driving. Therefore, the car is modified by the user using the code while playing the game.
However, Rockstar Games allows users to modify it, but only for personal, non-commercial use. Legal action may be taken if users create mods and sell them on the marketplace or to other players.
GTA 6: Rockstar Games Releases Statement on Cryptocurrencies and NFTs
In the new terms and conditions released by Rockstar Games, they clearly state that users cannot modify their games into NFTs and cryptocurrencies. Users who modify GTA 6 or any other game released by R* into NFTs or cryptocurrencies are “commercially exploitative,” the statement said.
Therefore, even using the mod for personal purposes by creating an NFT or cryptocurrency for GTA 6 will be legally binding. In short, Rockstar Games has clarified that games that showcase NFTs and cryptocurrencies cannot be modified by users.
Their explanation goes like this: "Commercial exploitation, including selling loot boxes for real currency or in-game equivalents. Selling virtual currency, generating revenue through corporate sponsorships or in-game integrations. Or using cryptocurrencies or crypto assets (such as NFTs)" would be classified as "Commercial Exploitation". You can read the new and updated terms and conditions here and here.
In conclusion, Rockstar Games may take legal action against 3rd party usage of NFTs and cryptocurrencies/modding of any kind. However, whether GTA 6 will incorporate cryptocurrencies and NFTs into its gameplay is currently unknown.
